The Challenge

Facing public scrutiny, a major network and production company engaged our team to help foster a more inclusive on-set culture, ensure a safe and respectful working environment, and pro-actively manage the image and reputation of their flagship television show going forward. 

How We Helped

Our collaborative efforts focused on three key objectives:

  1. Educating the entire crew on fostering an inclusive culture

  2. Ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on set, and

  3. Managing the show’s image and reputation

We launched a series of workshops that addressed unconscious bias, identified ways to create inclusive work environments for the crew, and provided tools for navigating sensitive issues on set. We also provided individual coaching for talent, offering a confidential space for learning and dialogue around challenging DEI-related topics in the media.  During the show's production, our on-set consulting played a pivotal role. We collaborated with Legal and Standards & Practices to review wardrobe, dialogue, and contestant acts, ensuring alignment with their values and industry inclusion standards. We also participated in pre-air episode screenings and monitored social media and press coverage in real time which enabled the team to identify potential risks early and take proactive steps to address them.

The Impact

The impact of our partnership has been significant. In the six years since we started working with the show, there has been a notable shift in the culture to a much warmer and more inclusive environment for talent and the crew and an absence of major DEI-related incidents. Furthermore, producers and talent are now well-versed in contemporary language and issues relating to race, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, among many others, facilitating more informed and respectful interactions across the board.  This shared fluency has supported more thoughtful, informed, and respectful interactions on and off the set and strengthened internal dynamics.
