“Moving the Needle: Accelerating Racial Diversity in Elite Professional Firms”

This report uncovers the reasons why many elite professional service firms struggle to make headway on their DEI initiatives and offers a framework for accelerating diversity and making continuous improvement across the board. It offers real world examples of what elite law firms have to done to accelerate their DEI progress based on interviews with managing partners of major law firms like Akin Gump, Greenberg Traurig, Paul Weiss, Skadden Arps, Dentons, and McGuireWoods.

Beauty and Cosmetics Industry

One of the primary challenges for any global company is navigating cultural differences across regions.  What constitutes “diversity” and “inclusion” can vary significantly from one country to another. While diversity in the US may often refer to gender, race and ethnicity, other regions may prioritize factors such as age, socioeconomic status, or religion.  Our client, a global beauty company, retained us looking to develop a global multi-year D&I strategic plan that would be relevant to and resonate with employees in regions where the term “diversity” had historically been linked to only race and gender and influenced by US practices.

Cultural Institutions/Museums

In response to growing societal demands (including the “Decolonize the Museum” movement) and internal recognition of the need for greater diversity and inclusion, a prominent museum sought our expertise to develop and implement a multiyear diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) strategic plan (the “Plan”) that would foster more diversity in staff, volunteers, visitors, artists and collections.

Entertainment Industry

Facing public scrutiny, a major network and production company sought our guidance regarding how they could foster inclusivity, create a safe and welcoming atmosphere on the production of their flagship television show, and manage the image and reputation of the show going forward.

Legal Industry/Law Firms

VallotKarp partnered with a prominent Am Law 100 firm that wanted to enhance its diversity and inclusion efforts generally, and more specifically improve the retention of attorneys from underrepresented groups.  Our collaboration aimed to provide tools and skills to overcome obstacles to retention and development and enhance inclusion and belonging.

Financial Services

This financial services firm sought to continue their learning journey by embedding DEI principles more deeply into the firm culture and extending these initiatives to their portfolio companies. After conducting two initial DEI workshops, the firm wanted to find ways to ensure that DEI practices were integrated at all levels.
